Today we are always looking for the best ways to insulate our homes. One of the most tried and tested ways of doing this is by using fibreglass insulation. Fibreglass insulation is just what it sounds like. It is made from tiny pieces of fibre and tiny pieces of glass mixed together to help insulate open areas.
Installing fibreglass insulation is quite simple. It usually comes in long sheets that can be adjusted down to the right size. Fibreglass insulation is quite effective in reducing the amount of energy used in the home. It is estimated that the average household can reduce their energy by over 20% if the use fibreglass insulation properly.
One does need to be careful where the put fibreglass insulation. Generally, fibreglass should never be put behind finished basement walls. The reason being is that these are areas of trapped moisture. Many place fibreglass installation in these areas thinking it will absorb the moisture. Unfortunately the fibreglass installation will only trap it. It can create a breeding ground for mould and mildew and eventually wet rot.
Fibreglass wall insulation should be approached with some caution. As with the basement, all moisture behind the walls should be taken care off. If not the fibreglass insulation will create more problems than it solves.
Fibreglass insulation is also useful for insulating pipes. Lots of heat and energy can be lost through the pipes as air and water travels through. Good pipe insulation can keep the heat inside the pipe and reduce the amount of activity on the boiler. Fibreglass pipe insulation can reduce the overall energy usage even further resulting in lower fuel costs and less damage done to the environment.
Fibreglass insulation is widely available in many home stores and building supply yards. The price depends on the amount and quality desired. However, it is usually quite reasonable and easy to install.
Fibreglass insulation is a very effective way to reduce our overall energy use. It helps keep the hot and cool air where it is needed so it isn’t wasted through escaping. The end result is less money spent on energy bills and less damage done to the planet.
