Antique Wood Stoves

Woodstoves may be on the rise lately in popularity but they are hardly a new concept. Woodstoves have been around for centuries and have been an essential part of homes in decades past. Today, woodstoves are making a come back. Many are opting for imitations that look good but still provide that fresh new look. Some are taking up the challenge of installing an authentic antique woodstove.

Antique woodstoves range in style and of course price. They are usually expensive due to the fact that they have likely undergone extensive renovations to get them workable again. These antique woodstoves however were built to last and many old farm houses and cottages still have the original one inside.

The history of antique stoves is quite interesting. They were made of 5 or 6 cast iron plates from about 1720-1740. They were also a copy of a German design. Later in the 1750’s Ben Franklin improved upon this design by creating what was known as the Pennsylvania fireplace.

From the 1760’s onward the antique stoves started to become larger. They help up to 10 plates, contained doors and oven space. Later in the 19th century the stove became small and more ornate in design. These were known as box stoves and were as efficient as the older models due to many improvements in technology.

Antique woodstoves can be absolutely beautiful and add a unique sense of charm to any room. They provide a lovely focal point and decorative feature. Many of the old antique woodstoves are still useable and kick out a large amount of heat. This makes them highly desirable in harsh winter months and when the energy bills arrive.

Restoring an antique woodstove can be a very rewarding experience. However, if it is in pretty bad condition a professional should be consulted. Especially if this antique woodstove is going to be for use. There are several how to guides available from antique stores and restoration specialists.

The antique woodstove has earned a place in history. They went from something that was absolutely essential to something that is useful and well as decorative. Many are catching the restoration bug and putting their efforts into returning one of these stoves to their former glory.
